Our neighborhoods are changing……………….

In recent years there has been an alarming increase in the number of homes in our area being converted to short-term whole-house rentals. It’s estimated that they now number 900 or more in our zip code 98826. This trend is fed in part by out-of-area realtors marketing homes in our area as high-income rental properties. The toll this is taking on our community is not good for any of us;  local working families cannot find affordable rentals, profit-driven advertising and sales drive prices up which increases property taxes for all and the unique identity and sense of community we’ve built here is in jeopardy in many of our neighborhoods. Too many of our long-time area residents that have been involved, caring and giving  members of our community have lost the desire to be here-  much of what they loved about their neighborhood has fallen victim to having itinerant weekend visitors next door rather than friends and neighbors. Unfortunately, those weekend visitors too frequently prove not to be respectful of neighbors or property boundaries.

Chelan County is currently in the process of exploring revision of county code to allow but regulate whole-house short-term rentals in areas zoned residential. That may be an acceptable conclusion to some but many folks feel also that operation of these commercial operations in residential areas has never been legal under existing code and should therefor not be legitimized. If you support prohibiting, limiting or reasonably regulating these short-term rentals in residential neighborhoods in some form, time is essential- now is the time to get involved by doing two things:  1) Reply by email to fred2baglee@gmail.com to be included in an email grouping of similarly-supportive people and 2) give voice to your support by signing the on-line petition at https://www.change.org/p/chelan-county-board-of-commissioners-don-t-legalize-commercial-short-term-rentals-in-our-residential-neighborhoods-e2173562-86f8-4dec-827b-9ec3da4bc679?recruiter=24918602&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=share_petition

Our Planning Commission and County Commissioners must hear that all is not well with the current trend of the commercialization of our residential neighborhoods.

Thank you for your time. This is my personal position and not of  this website………..
