Lake Wenatchee sockeye fishery opens Aug. 1
Action: Lake Wenatchee opens for sockeye salmon fishing.
Effective date: Aug. 1 through Aug. 3, 2010. Opens one hour before official sunrise.
Species affected: Sockeye salmon.
Daily limit: Two sockeye 12 inches in length or greater.
Location: Lake Wenatchee (Chelan Co.).
Reason for action: The 2010 return of sockeye will be sufficient to provide for the Lake Wenatchee spawning escapement goal, and additional sockeye will be present to provide for sport fishing opportunity.
Other information: Selective gear rules and a night closure will be in effect. Bull trout, steelhead, and chinook salmon must be released unharmed without removing the fish from the water. Legal angling hours are one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.
Release sockeye with one or more holes (round, approximately ¼” in diameter) punched in the tail (caudal fin) of the fish. These fish are part of a study and have been anesthetized; the FDA requires a 21-day ban on consumption of these fish.
After the fishery closes, WDFW fishery managers will assess the catch and determine if additional fishing opportunities for sockeye remain. Any announcement will be posted under Emergency Fishing Rules on the department’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations .
Information contact: Chad Jackson, (509) 754-4624.

As a reminder for everyone, new this year fisher folks will need the 2010 Columbia River Salmon Endorsement for this Sockeye fishery. Check out the 2010 Reg book for details.
Any fishing reports? Also, it looks like they haven’t updated the counts at Tumwater since th 25th?
I fished Tuesday morning. I noticed the WDFW was out checking boats from about 9:30-noon. I overheard one boater say the WDFW told him they may reopen the season on Saturday depending on the data gathered during the 3 day season. Let’s hope.
Also, the boat next to us hooked up a double. Both of the fish were landed and both of the fish were hooked on very short leaders. It appeared the leaders were less than 9 inches. Both were on white flashers. I quickly reeled in and switched to a short leader on my green flasher and hooked up within 10 minutes. It also seemed harder to net the fish with such a short leader behind the flasher. I run an extra flasher off the down rigger ball and attach a release clip 2-3 feet above the ball with my line and flasher. I am beginning to believe the more flash in the water leads to more activity as evidenced by the doubles one sees.
It’s Official! Wonder how long “until further notice” will be once we have a full weekend of fishing.

Lake Wenatchee sockeye fishery re-opens Aug. 7
Action: Re-open Lake Wenatchee to sockeye salmon fishing.

Species affected: Sockeye salmon.
Daily limit: The daily limit per angler is two sockeye 12 inches in length or greater.
Location: Lake Wenatchee (Chelan Co.).
Reason for action: The 2010 return of sockeye is sufficient to provide for the Lake Wenatchee spawning escapement goal and provide additional sportfishing opportunities.
Other information: Anglers are reminded that selective gear rules (page 19 of the 2010/11 Sportfishing Rules Pamphlet) and night closure will be in effect. Additionally, anglers are required to possess a Columbia River Salmon/Steelhead Endorsement as part of their valid fishing license. WDFW will closely monitor the fishery, which will continue until the majority of the surplus fish are harvested. Anglers should check for any rule changes on the department’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/ .
