Fish Lake Skate Club Progress

by admin on January 3, 2010

Gary Schuster continues to do a great job leading the Skate Club project.  The team is hoping to build a shed this week for storing tools and a about 30 pairs of skates. Gary has a complete update below the photo, here are three things you can do:
1: Make a donation for building the shed, you can do this via paypal on the About Page of this site.
2: Donate skates, if you have a pair of skates that isn’t get a lot of use, contact Gary to add them to the shed collection.  email: Gary Schuster Email
3: Please pay for parking $5, the folks at the Cove Resort at Fish Lake are being very helpful.

Clearing recent snow off the rink is Gary Schuster, Arnie Scown and Paul Rowlings.

NEWS FROM THE FISH LAKE SKATING ASSOCIATION
We had a good run of great ice, even after it snowed, thanks to volunteer help including Arnie Scown and Paul Rawlings manning snowblowers to remove 10 inches of show on 17,000 square feet of ice.

At the moment there is about a inch of slush on the rink. It would be best to leave it alone and see if mother nature does us a favor by melting and refreezing. The next cold snap will begin Tuesday night. If necessary the pump will be out to flood the ice. This is made possible by the work of Dick Knight & Vern Christianson who helped in the construction of a snow berm to contain water pumped onto the ice

In the mean time it would be great if we could get started with construction of the shed at the Cove Resort to store skates and equipment for easy access by all. Yesterday, 5 sheets of plywood, some 2×4′s and nails for a gun, all donated by Tom Dahl, was delivered to the Cove by him. Attached is the list of materials needed to build an 8 x 8 shed so, if anyone has this stuff hanging around, donations of material would be appreciated. Money works too. Thus far we have received $90 in donations.

If you or someone you know has skates not being used, they would also be greatly appreciated. We actually have had to disappoint some would-be skaters because of a shortage of skates this past week. There are also some holes in our inventory of skate sizes.

Just a reminder that Scott & Nadine West are accommodating our activities at the Cove Resort. There is a $5.00 per car fee for keeping the road & parking area plowed and a porta-poddy on site. There are envelopes and a receptacle next to the store for inserting remittances. Please put the notation “Skating” on the envelope.

It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the ice, in particularly all the families playing together. So far we have had toddlers to great grand parents out there. Abilities ranged from beginners to competition skaters. A couple of hockey skirmishes even occurred. I think we are off to a great start. It is our goal to make this skating adventure accessible to as many as possible. All it takes to join the Association is to show up, so spread the word. E-mail addresses are requested so that participants can receive updated information.

Gary,
I do not see the list of items you need attached to this message. We recently finished building a room on the back of our house so we may have some left over items you need. We have a roll of ice guard for under the metal roof. and some other items. If you could email me the list to cabinnfever@wildblue.net that would be great.
Thanks
Elaine

The same goes for us – we have some building supplies left over as well. The list can be sent to: anitatune.mj@comcast.net

Thanks for all your efforts,
Anita

Thanks to all, this is great! I grew up skating on natural ice and look forward to playing some hockey. Where can I send my donation?

Ken
