As of 10-1-09 the ban on outdoor burning in Chelan County has been lifted. Outdoor attended burning is now permitted with the following conditions:
1. Fires are limited to 4 feet by 4 feet and 3 feet high.
2. No permit is needed for outdoor burning unless you are clearing land or removing trees from an orchard. Then you would neeed a permit from Dept of Ecology: telephone 509-575-2490.
3. You may burn only natural vegetation. Some prohibited materials are cardboard, treated wod, construction debris, paper, plastics.
4. The fire must be attended at all times.
5. No fires within 50 feet of structures.
6. Non-orchard burn piles must be no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet wide and 3 feet high.
7. No burning after dark.
8. You may not burn materials that have been hauled from another property.
9. Never use gasoline to start a burn pile or any other fire.
10. Burn barrels are not allowed. Burn barrels are specially harmful because the fires burn at very low temperatures. They receive very little oxygen and produce a lot of smoke that contains toxic substances. Almost all of the pollutants released into the air stay close to the ground where they are inhaled. You can be fined up to $10,000 per day for burning in a burn barrel.
11. You must have a charged hose or other means of extinguishing a fire present at all times.
