The Chelan County Public Works Department has marked many old growth trees along Beaver Valley Road and the Chumstick Highway for removal. They are marked with yellow ribbon or white spray paint.
The main concentration of these beautiful trees is from half way up Beaver Hill, through Plain, and ending at the start of Chiwawa Loop Road.
The valley’s natural beauty will be impacted greatly. These trees have been growing in this valley for many years, and are some of the oldest trees I’ve seen in the area. They may pre-date the original pioneering families that settled the valley in the late 1800’s. We must protect the distinctive assets of Chelan County!
The County has state grant money available for “hazardous tree removal”, and they plan to spend it! Do you remember those fantastic reflective markers they put in last fall? That was last years state grant money. In our area nearly 50% of these markers have been sheared off or damaged, and these ripped up markers continue to litter our roads. Is there any plan to clean up the mess?
Please take a drive and look at these incredible trees that they want to get rid of, and think of how their removal will forever alter our valley.
Please call or email the individuals listed below and let them know that it is not OK to remove these trees.
Thanks,
Rob & Gwen Whitten

The trees that were marked were part of a safety program with the State. We met with Public Works this morning and have agreed that the trees in Plain will not be cut. The trees on the Chumstick will be prioritized and brought back to the Commission for discussion next week. After driving up Chumstick it appears to me that there are few trees that present a real safety issue. We are also looking in to using the grant money for another safety project. I will try and post an update next week after our session. Thanks. Keith Goehner
