George’s Snow Report

by George Wilson on January 30, 2008

Good morning-

In the last 24 hours we’ve received another 7.25 inches at our place which brings us to 193 cumulative for the year. Temp this AM is 16 degrees- this is really some light, dry fluffy snow.

Have had a couple of inquiries about the condition of the ice on the lake. In parts of the lake where it froze up a couple days before it did here at our place near the East end of the lake on the South shore, I think the ice is probably somewhat thicker than here. I walked out on it the first morning it was frozen and it was very thin and cracked after walking out only about 4 feet on it. Since then we have had temps consistently below freezing but not real cold and the snow we have gotten will insulate the ice also. We see numerous places where the ice has been pushed back down into the eater by the weight of the snow, fissured and water has then come up through the cracks and froze on top of the ice. I would be real cautious on this stuff but some folks say they have 5 inches or so of ice which would make it somewhat safer.

ADMIN: It would be a help to collect a variety of ice observations from around the lake for visitors before the weekend, so if you can report back with current conditions and location we would appreciate it.

Where I was grew up in a small town in northern Minnesota we’d get 40 inches of ice in the winter. We could drive pretty much anywhere on it but not near inlets, outlets or springs. We did do a lot on the ice but there were enough incidents of us going through that we also learned to be very respectful of it.

More snow forecast for today and tonight…………

George.
