Fire Safety Preparation
As we enter fire season, regular reader Don Bottoms sent over the following information:
Hi!
Here’s a link to a pretty good, concise wildfire prep list. With the persistent “Red Flag” fire weather winds, maybe this or something like it should be posted.
Cheers!
Don
I just spent last week in Spokane doing wildfire risk assessments of homes in the area that burned in the Spokane Valley fire a little over a week ago. Many of the homes had a good defensible space surrounding the home. Of the 11 homes that burned in the fire almost 75% of them had less than 30 feet of defensible space surrounding the home!
We have a cabin in the Sumac Lane area and frankly we don’t have that much space around the home. I have seen many other homes in the Lake Wenatchee area that do not as well. We can all learn from this tragedy. The human tragedy of a fire is very real. Fortunately there was no loss of life. Loss of one’s home however is still a tragic occurrence. There is literally nothing left but ashes of these homes.
I urge everyone to consider what they can do to help prevent wildfire and protect your home and family.
Another excellent website for home owners in fire prone areas is http://www.firewise.org/
Remember, only you can prevent forest fires!
