Big problem- Bears and garbage

Bears and garbage

I was contacted Monday morning by several North Shore residents concerning
the bears obviously present there and the problems they are creating with
trash. I drove the whole North Shore that day and saw 10 or 12 really
disgusting displays of trash strewn all over the road. One North Shore
resident had put out 2 cans and the bear knocked the cans across the road
and spread the garbage so than cars couldn’t pass. A frustrated driver
finally moved the cans and knocked the garbage away with his feet so he
could pass. Other residents have been trying to clean up the messes but
obviously it’s not a pleasant task.

The problem appears to be that folks leaving on Sunday when the weekend is
over put their trash out then. With the pick-up not being until Tuesday the
local bear has two nights to plunder. And he does.

The full-time folks have found that pretty much the only way to keep the
trash from being spread around on the road is keep it in the garage or shed
and not put it out until Tuesday morning. Fastening the lid down with
bungies makes no difference- that keeps some birds and crows out but not
bears. If weekend users cannot find a neighbor to perhaps roll their trash
out on Tuesday mornings then packing it out and taking it home or disposing
of it on the way might be the solution. Obviously it’s in no-ones best
interest to re-enforce the bears dependence on trash in any one area so
whatever can be done to alleviate the bears attraction to the area would be
a good thing.

There are currently three bear traps placed in the area- two in Shugart
Flats and one in Ponderosa and efforts are underway to have another placed
somewhere on the North Shore.

Please do what you can to help alleviate this problem!!

George
