Yellow Jacket Bait Contest
One of our lake neighbor’s kids stumbled upon a yellow jacket nest in an old stump yesterday He was stung 12 times as thank you for his efforts.
This inspired our pre -labor day Yellow Jacket Bait contest. Enter your favorite yellow jacket bait as a comment and your friendly administrators will be pick a winner.
We’ve had great results at Lake Wenatchee in the Summer and Fall using small pieces of fish added to our regular baited yellow jacket trap.
August 30th, 2007 at 2:17 pmLeftover salmon skin is dynamite but, a couple of small pieces of canned tuna will work too.
In the early Spring, we supplement our freshly set up traps with a tablespoon of fruit jam or non-diet cola under the cotton soaked with the regular attractant. This will lure the early hatching queens and help to reduce the summer population.
Make sure that your traps are placed where they get morning sun and afternoon shade.
Try it, you will be amazed at the results.
If you don’t happen to own a “trap” you can create a very effective one by placing a foot long twig across the top of a bucket of soapy water, then place strips of raw bacon over the twig so they hang down toward the water. The silly things eat until they get so heavy they fall off and drown. It’s kind of mean, but it works in a pinch.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:01 pmAnother “Idea de Jour” for dealing with bees/hornets. This seems to work: Take a small brown paper bag about lunch-bag size, hold it together at the neck and blow it up like a balloon. Tie it off so it stays puffed-out and then hang it outside. Other bees/hornets are apparently quite territorial and do not want to be around other nests. We tried this this weekend at the fire station during the sale and the consensus was that it seemd to work.
